The future of energy and climate
Europe aims to be climate neutral by 2050, which means that all activities do not have a negative impact on the climate. To achieve this, there is a need for a renewed energy system in the Netherlands that focuses on generating, using, transporting and storing energy. But what exactly does an energy system entail and why is it necessary to revise it?
What is an energy system?
An energy system can be located at the level of a building, a neighborhood or even a country, where these systems are interconnected. It includes the relationship between energy demand and energy supply (generation and use), as well as the transport and storage of different forms of energy. To become climate neutral, these systems must switch to renewable (sustainable) energy sources, such as electricity, hydrogen, heat, green gases and green fuels.
Why is it important now?
The Netherlands is in the middle of the energy transition, the transition from fossil fuels to sustainably generated energy. We are making homes, businesses and vehicles more sustainable and reducing the use of gas, oil and coal. At the same time, we generate more energy from wind, sun, nuclear energy and biological residues. These changes are causing rapid and far-reaching adjustments to our current energy system, which is not prepared for this.
These changes require adaptation and expansion of our energy infrastructure, including cables, pipes and pipes for the transport and storage of energy. In addition, smart solutions for batteries, hydrogen production and innovations are essential. A new energy system is therefore needed to meet these needs.
What is already being done?
